Displaying Accessibility to Haringey Doctor Surgeries in QGIS

The map below shows an outline of the London borough of Haringey, with GP surgeries represented by red dots. The heat map uses the kernel density approach to illustrate hotspots of surgeries based on proximity. Where there is an isolated GP surgery, it appears to have a perfectly circular area around it which is green in its core and yellow around its edges. However, where surgeries are located significantly close enough for the circles to overlap, a cluster is formed. Hotspots are represented by higher intensity colouring (dark green) and irregular shapes.

Heat map of Haringey GP surgeries

Hotspots can be identified in the south of the borough around Crouch End and Wood Green as well as around Green Lanes in the north. There are very few surgeries in south west Haringey as this area is dominated by Highgate Woods, an area of woodland which has a lower population density. Therefore, there are proportionally less residents in need of medical assistance.

Accessibility by Tube

This map indicates how accessible each Haringey GP is to residents travelling by tube. The tube stations are illustrated by a tube symbol whilst the surgeries are represented by a red cross. After calculating the distance between each surgery and its local tube station, the size and colour of the symbol is set by its value. Distance is calculated not as the crow flies but by taking a route by road; with all roads assumed to be two-way. A larger cross and a darker shade of red indicates a greater accessibility value which means that the distance to the nearest tube station is shorter.

Underground stations and GP surgeries in Haringey

It can be noticed that the previously identified Crouch End cluster of surgeries is not very accessible by tube. Highgate station serves just one GP surgery whilst Turnpike Lane station is in very close proximity to seven surgeries. As the borough of Haringey contains large areas of hills and greenery, it is not particularly well connected by tube lines, especially around the north east and north west of the borough. Therefore, the GP surgeries in those areas incur poorer accessibility and this is displayed by the small, lightly-shaded crosses.
